Book Reviews of Common American Birds.

1. "Longtime illustrator and natural history writer Baerg has prepared a beginner's guide to the most familiar birds of North America. In 64 pages of compact illustration and text, this book would be most appreciated by youngsters or other novices interested in recognizing more than 300 common species. The full-color paintings generally represent each species with a male in breeding plumage, portrayed in an appropriate habitat. The text comments briefly on important features of identification, including calls and songs. This inexpensive introduction will be helpful to beginning bird-watchers as they start to know and appreciate their "feathered friends." (Charles Leck, Biological Sciences, 1996)

2. "Common American Birds by Harry J. Baerg is a great book on exactly what its title states. The illustrations are in color, and each pictured bird is briefly described. Snow buntings, Eastern wood peewees, common ravens, ruffed grouse and more are featured. This is a handy reference guide." (L. A. Van Veghel, BookLovers, February March April 1999)
